They help you in reviewing your contract documents. They help you review your tax papers, motor vehicle services, covers preventive legal services, trial defense services, and legal shield. The identity theft service is not available for the basic package but you can always upgrade to that for extra $10 per month.

It costs $249 to become an associate. This is relatively cheap compared to other business ventures out there.

Day after: SCOTUS ruling not so bad? – Yahoo! News

New money will flow into campaigns this year as a result of Thursday’s Supreme Court decision, but will the impact be as dramatic as all the hyperventilating in Washington suggests?

Experts say probably not.

“It’s time for everybody to calm down,” said Ken Gross, a campaign finance expert at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, who, like other lawyers in the field, thinks the possible repercussions of the decision have been exaggerated.

The court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission clears the way for corporations and unions to use their general fund cash to run sharp, targeted ads in political campaigns.

It’s a ruling that advocates of campaign finance reform claim will allow businesses to tap into their vast treasuries and flood the airwaves with hard-hitting ads — commercials that Democrats fear will be aimed mostly at them.

That’s certainly possible, and, even if corporations hold off initially, they could unleash their cash in the future if relations with Congress truly go bad. In addition, there could well be some ideologically driven firms that decide to target particular candidates — just as some wealthy individuals have done in the past.

But the reality is likely to be something more modest, mainly a shifting of cash that’s already in the system away from so-called 527 groups.

In the past decade, corporations have actually been trying to get out of the business of big political giving. They sided with reform advocates when the McCain-Feingold law was first challenged in 2003 and testified on behalf of its ban on unlimited corporate giving to the political parties, which were dubbed “soft money” donations.

The reasons for this reluctance were complex. Some executives hated the way politicians always had their hands out, making appeals that were difficult to turn down for fear of retribution in the legislative process. Others didn’t like the lack of control they had over how their money was spent.

The court ruling would give corporate officials that control, but many of them may decide — especially those in publicly held companies — to keep the cash for their real business needs.

Running attack ads against political targets would create real risks of alienating customers and shareholders. And, given voters’ sentiments toward corporations today, most politicians would probably not welcome a glowing ad campaign on their behalf that was funded by Big Business.

Most CEOs will avoid the whole question by simply sticking with their traditional — and safe — government relations package of lobbying and limited giving through the in-house political action committee, experts said.

As evidence, they note that in 2004 corporations had a chance to jump into the ad game in a big way when wealthy individuals, searching for a way around the ban on soft-money donations, began creating new organizations that were dubbed 527s because of their tax status.

One corporate executive who supported the campaign finance reform laws bans on big donations, remembers being approached to donate to a Republican-leaning 527. “It took me three nanoseconds” to say no, he said.

The penchant CEOs have shown for keeping a low political profile for their businesses has been reinforced lately by shareholder groups that are pressing companies to publicly disclose their political spending and the process by which they distribute that money.

Currently, about 70 firms, or roughly half of the Standard & Poor’s top 100 companies including Microsoft, Aetna, and Time Warner, have adopted such practices.

Bruce Freed, head of the Center for Political Accountability, an organization that advocates for such disclosures, said he will redouble his efforts in light of the court ruling. He expects success largely because a shareholder disclosure policy will be a corporations best reason “to resist the heightened pressure” to give to political groups.

That’s not to say corporations have or will be silent in the political debate. For decades, they’ve expressed their views through trade associations that can shield the involvement of their members because they don’t disclose membership lists.

Many experts predict that those groups, which include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Rifle Association, will be the biggest beneficiaries of the court ruling.

However, the fundraising rules for them weren’t change in any way by the court ruling. Even before the decision in Citizens United was handed down, the chamber and others trade groups could legally receive unlimited donations from corporations.

To be sure, those groups are likely to ramp up their fundraising efforts or increase membership dues to gain new ad revenue, but one chamber official said Friday he’s not expecting a windfall since they work all the donors pretty hard already. “My reaction to the ruling was to shrug,” he said.

A more significant change for trade associations is that they won’t have to spend hours with their lawyers trying to adhere to the prohibitions on naming candidates and telling people how to vote in their advertising. Both of those were struck down in the court’s decision.

Labor unions are drawing similar conclusions about the new playing field. Dues may go up to expand advertising pools. But union officials say their members are capable of giving only so much, so they, too, aren’t banking on a bonanza either, several said this week

A more interesting set of political players to watch will be wealthy individuals and privately held companies with a political agenda. They are clear beneficiaries of Citizens Union because they will be able to operate much more freely.

The Democrats already have a cadre of active and organized billionaires and millionaires willing to assist their candidates and party.

In the 2004 cycle, wealthy donors helped raise about $150 million to fund two 527 groups, The Media Fund and America Coming Together, which did television ads and voter turnout operations on behalf of Sen. John Kerry’s presidential campaign. The Federal Election Commission ultimately slapped big fines on both groups for alleged violations of campaign finance laws.

The Supreme Court ruling now would allow those wealthy individuals to spend their cash or their company’s cash on advertising and other political activity without going through the trouble of creating a 527.

Many of the financial backers of those two Democratic organizations, including billionaire George Soros, are part of the Democracy Alliance, a group that is helping the Democrats build candidate training and think-tank infrastructure for the future.

Republican patriarchs were slow to copy the Democrats, in part because of the shaky legal status of the 527s and because Karl Rove, President George W. Bush’s chief political adviser, didn’t want them meddling in the campaign.

But Rove is gone now, and, even before this week’s court ruling, some rich Republicans were beginning to position themselves to be more active in the coming elections. It is those individuals who have been on the sidelines who could be the greatest source of new cash coming into the political system.

Black Rock Group, a strategic communications firm formed this year by Carl Forti and Michael Dubke, two former Republican advisers, has been working with four wealthy Republican individuals who want to engage in the process by promoting conservative causes and Republican candidates.

They had been seeking guidance from the FEC about what they could legally do. The court ruling appears to clear the way for broader activity than the FEC had advised, Forti said.

Ben Ginsberg, a Republican campaign finance expert, predicts that the rise of outside groups and wealthy individuals will significantly diminish the role and voice of the national political parties and the candidates themselves.

To be sure, candidates in high-profile, competitive races have found themselves outspent by deep-pocketed, single-issue outsiders before the Supreme Court weighed in with its decision.

Early reports suggest that both candidates in the Massachusetts Senate special election this week were outspent by outsiders. And both parties were already bracing for similarly crowded airwaves in the 2010 midterms, when the deeper pockets of issue advocacy groups and trade associations can have outsized influence in House and Senate races.

At the presidential level, the dynamics are different.

In the 2004 campaign, Bush sent word he didn’t want the help of these groups while the Democratic Party’s role was virtually usurped by The Media Fund and America Coming Together.

In the aftermath of the race, the Democrats — and their wealthy backers — concluded that the system didn’t work and that a strong national party was essential in running efficient campaigns.

In the 2008 campaign, both then-Sen. Barack Obama and Republican nominee Sen. John McCain signaled they didn’t want them around — and they weren’t.

All of which convinces Gross that the potential impact of Citizens Union has been overstated.

“I think this will be very incremental,” said Gross. “The chamber and other trade associations will undoubtedly accumulate funds for targeted races, but I don’t see this seeping its way into competitive races all over the country.”
