Admittedly, I didn’t know much about PPL until I kept getting asked the question, “What’s the deal with the Prepaid Legal Services scam?” by my students. Like a good mentor, I did my homework and can now intelligently provide answers. Through my research, the basis of the ugly word, “scam” can be divided into two groups. First, there are some jaded customers out there who had a less desirable experience with the service. Second, are the people who signed up for the business opportunity.
Let’s address the customers first. How many of us have heard or even told a joke about an attorney? We have multiple attorneys in our family and each time they told us they were going to be a lawyer, the reaction was always jokingly, “Great, that’s just what the world needs.” So, it’s not too much of a stretch to believe that there are some unhappy clients. Most of the complaints I hear are because, like a lot of contracts, the fine print was not read. If you need help writing a will, buying a house or other “minor” advice, PPL is a great service. Now, if you decide starting a multi-million dollar drug ring is a good idea and get caught with enough pot in your car to build the world’s largest bonfire, you are not going to be covered.
The second group of people providing the most fuel to the Prepaid Legal Services scam are those who tried the network marketing business opportunity that the company provides. In general, there is a 97% failure rate in network marketing, so this is also not a surprise that PPL gets these complaints as well. Through my research, PPL is no different from most reputable network marketing companies when it comes to angry associates. This is a subject I am actually an expert on, so here’s why people think it is a scam: most people who sign up DO NOT treat it like it’s a real business. It’s that simple.
Most people don’t have the genuine desire to make this work for them. Network marketing is not a get rich quick opportunity. That’s not how it works. You have to join a good leader with a good team that can teach you step-by-step how to build your business. Most people don’t get that and fall in love with the amount of money and residual income they can make. For the record, I am not a PPL associate, so in my unbiased opinion, there is no such thing as a Prepaid Legal Services scam. Yes, like every company out there, they have complaints. And, in the network marketing industry, you’ll hear the same complaints no matter the company. PPL has been around long enough to prove themselves and the service they provide fills a valuable niche in our community.
