Prepaid Legal Services has been around for around 40 years, so it’s pretty safe to say that they are doing something right. Typically, consumers can sniff out a shady business well before the almost half-century mark.
Basically, they offer legal advice and services to their customers at a very reasonable price. The idea is that even if you don’t have a lot of money to keep a high priced attorney on retainer, everybody deserves to be represented.
So, where are all of these prepaid legal complaints coming from? Let’s not kid ourselves; attorneys don’t have the best reputations. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Shawshank Redemption”, you learn that, “There ain’t a guilty man in Shawshank.” They’re all innocent because their lawyers, “Screwed them.”
I’ve done a lot of research and the biggest prepaid legal complaints can be divided into two categories, the service and the business opportunity. The latter makes up the lion’s share of the complaints.
The service prepaid legal complaints are mostly due to not reading the fine print. For your monthly fee, you are entitled to advice on basic things like writing a will, buying a home or a speeding ticket. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time and are on trial for murder, you are not covered.
Obviously, that’s an extreme example, but you get the point. Now, people unhappy with the business opportunity are the ones shouting their prepaid legal complaints the loudest from the mountain tops.
The company is set up as a network marketing or multi-level marketing opportunity. Their distributors are able to not only sell the service, but sign up other people to be distributors and leverage their time.
In general, the MLM industry may get a worse rep than attorneys. Without going too far into the reasons, 97% of people fail in MLM. Yes, that is an absolutely HUGE number! But only a very select few are serious about their business and join a leader who can show them step-by-step how to build their businesses. When you do the analysis, it’s actually really easy to see why that number is so high.
To sum it up, PPL is a tested company that, like most companies, gets it share of bad press. The service they provide is just a small fraction of the prepaid legal complaints, so I highly recommend it. Most of the gripes you’ll hear is how distributors didn’t make any money and that PPL is a scam. Nothing could be further from the truth.
